Lab Location: Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare Center at West
Los Angeles, Building 114, Room 221, 11301 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles,
CA 90073
Lab facilities: Facilities include the Animal Biology Section
laboratory, the Molecular Biology Section Laboratory and the Bone Cell
Physiology Laboratory, housed in buldings 113 and 114. Together, these
laboratories provide over 2000 square feet of research space. The labs
are fully equipped for cell culture and molecular biology experiments,
epifluorescent microscopy, and computer image analysis. Adjacent VA
Core facilities include FACS analysis and histology; a fully accredited
animal research facility is housed in building 113. UCLA core facilities
are also available, including Microarray analysis.
Animal Facilities: Yes
Type: Animal studies currently include immunodeficient mice,
rats and rabbits.
Type of research: Currently, the lab is
focused on studying the effects of retinoids on cell communication and
growth in BCCA/SCCA (cell culture and animal models).
Funding: VA Research Career Development
Research Fellowship Available: Yes
Investigator's Name: George Rudkin, MD, Asst. Professor, UCLA
Div. of Plastic Surgery.
Project Title: Effects of Retinoids on cell communication and
growth in skin cancer.
Brief Description: We are investigating the effects of retinoid
compounds on gap junctional intercellular communication and cell growth
in BCCA/SCCA models (cell culture and immunodeficient mice).
Opportunity for student degree program:
No
Funding available from supervisor
PARTIAL funding available. Student must obtain additional funding.
