Lab Facilities:
Facilities include the Animal Biology Section laboratory, the
Molecular Biology Section Laboratory and the Bone Cell Physiology
Laboratory, housed in buldings 113 and 114. Together, these laboratories
provide over 2000 square feet of research space. The labs are
fully equipped for cell culture and molecular biology experiments,
epifluorescent microscopy, and computer image analysis. Adjacent
VA Core facilities include FACS analysis and histology; a fully
accredited animal research facility is housed in building 113.
UCLA core facilities are also available, including Microarray
analysis.
Animal Facilities: Yes
Type: Animal studies
currently include mice, rats and rabbits.
Type of Research:
Cell culture, animal models and molecular biology. Currently,
the lab is focused on studies using rhBMP-2 produced in bacterial
expression systems, in an effort to develop bone graft substitute.
Funding: VA

Investigator's Name:
Timothy A. Miller, MD, Professor, UCLA Div. of Plastic
Surgery
Project Title:
Molecular Mechanism of Bone Regeneration: Role of BMP-2
Brief Description:
We have a long-standing interest in the development of bone-graft
substitutes. Currently, we are investigating the use of bacterial
expression systems for the production of rhBMP-2. Efficacy is
being tested in cell culture and animal models. Molecular mechanisms
are bring evaluated using Microarrays.
Opportunity for
student degree program: No
Funding available
from supervisor
PARTIAL funding available. Student must obtain additional funding.
Other Requirements (i.e.
background, MD degree, etc.)
Please specify: Prefer prior
cell culture/molecular biology experience.
